In one of those funny hiding in plain sight ways, you still might not notice that it's a restaurant or ever think to go in. But if you do choose to step through the greenery and over the threshold where a water fountain and more plants greet you, you will quickly leave the hustle bustle of the city behind you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">Right past the entrance are containers of homemade grappa of at least a dozen flavors and a couple of jugs of the house sangria, one red, one white. All of which is very good and you should order when you are seated. Someone, very likely Isacco himself, will show you to your table and go through the extensive list of evening specials. The regular menu is pretty straight forward so you'll want to pay attention. If you ask a question such as "How is the lamb prepared" you are likely to get an answer such as "The best!" accompanied by a song or a story. Isacco is a larger than life personality always eager to welcome people into this little Italian haven he has created. When he's not being a restauranteur, Isacco spends his time impersonating The King. In fact, the television set in the back is frequently playing old Elvis DVDs and if you are lucky you may hear Isacco sing a bar or two. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12.800000190734863px;">We passed by it many a time, until one evening when we were looking for a place to eat and decided to be adventurous. Now we've been back on several occasions because of the relaxed, warm atmosphere. </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px;">It's a tad pricey, but the food is high quality and you can always get a seat. Just be sure to leave yourself well over an hour for your meal as the pace is distinctly relaxed and European.</span><br />

There are such slim pickings around Times Square that I often say that I feel like it's a food dessert. Which is exactly what I was saying to my friend as we sat on the red steps of the TKTS booth, but then I looked past her and spotted Blue Fin. As if reading my mind she said "You know, there's actually a pretty good sushi place around here..."<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Finally, an easy decision! Despite appearing to be packed due to all the people jammed into the bar area, we had no problem snagging a table. We ordered a couple of glasses of Sancerre and then settled in to figure out what to order. It was a hard decision because they do sushi and cooked fish equally well, but in the end we decided to split a bunch of small plates. We ordered:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<ul>
<li>Half Dozen West Coast Oysters</li>
<li>Roasted Baby Beets with Crispy Farro, Pickled Onion, Ricotta Salata Truffle Creme Fraiche</li>
<li>Tuna Tartare with Avocado, Sesame, Ginger, Wonton Crisps</li>
<li>Black Mission Figs with Serrano Ham, Manchego, Aged Balsamic</li>
<li>Charred Baby Octopus with Sweet Peppers, Oranges, Chickpeas, Carrot Harissa Vinaigrete</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
Everything was top notch, but a special shout out to the Charred Octopus which was particularly outstanding. Sorry there are no pretty pictures this time, but you can find them on <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2012/07/finally-blue-fin.html">my original post on Blue Fin</a>.<br />

Our favorites were: Fire Flame Curry, Bada Bing, Vampire Killer, Salted Caramel. The poppers were pretty bland on their own, but since the tenders had a ton of sauce, they worked well to make mini versions of our favorites. This place is pretty much perfect for a late night junk food craving.</div>

We were having a pretty killer night that started out with <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/08/hooked-on-lukes-lobster.html">lobster rolls from Luke's</a>, an <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/08/go-to-caracas-arepa-bar-to-go.html">arepa from Caracas Arepa Bar To Go,</a> and <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/08/a-heavenly-evening-at-angels-share.html">drinks from Angel's Share</a>. But we weren't quite ready to call it a night, so we walked down to <a href="http://www.wisemennyc.com/">Wise Men</a>. Despite what the name would lead you to believe, this low profile little spot is actually owned by three women.<br />
<div>
<a name='more'></a>We were able to snag a couple of seats in the back under this rather intriguing meteor light fixture and ordered a round of drinks:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
KENTUCKY BUCK</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bourbon, Strawberry, Ginger, Lime, Bitters $14</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
BLOOD AND SAND </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wise Men: Meteor?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The drinks were good, the decor was very... interesting, as exhibited by the above. There was a DJ spinning providing a hip ambience, but you were still able to chat. It's not exactly a speakeasy, but it's a pretty inconspicuous doorway so this is a nice if you are looking for a place late on a friday night in the East Village that isn't obnoxiously packed.</div>

Angel's Share has been on my list of must try speakeasies since moving to the city more than 4 years ago. Tonight, I made that wish come true. When The Mr. announced that he was craving a lobster roll from Luke's, we jumped in a cab and I requested that we be dropped of at St Mark's & 3rd instead of 1st Ave. I identified Village Yokocho and confidently walked up the stairs. When I reached the top I spied an inconspicuous door to my left, so without pause I made a beeline there. Opening it I found a jam packed foyer to the bar. I squeezed through to the hostess and put my name on the 2 hour wait list.<br />
<div>
<a name='more'></a>We made the most of that time with that <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/08/hooked-on-lukes-lobster.html">lobster roll at Luke's</a> followed by <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/08/go-to-caracas-arepa-bar-to-go.html">a quick stop in to Caracas Arepa Bar To Go</a>. When we made our way back and were immediately seated at the bar. We opened the menu and started the very difficult process of choosing our drinks. For the first round, The Mr selected the Sweet Lorraine from the cocktails made with traditional Japanese rice wine and soju. The flavors were complex and surprising, including the subtle flavor of tomato from the tomato water. I chose the Banana Old Fashioned, a rum cocktail in the style of the classic bourbon namesake. Again, I was surprised to find a lot of tastes shining through and not being overwhelmed by banana.</div>

We were definitely interested in Round 2. I had already been leaning towards the Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, so when the bartender recommended that to The Mr. I was super excited to give it a try. Which also meant that I could order the Charlie Brown another cocktail I had spied on the menu that involved peanut butter. The bartender (who was suuuuper nice) lit a pile of spices which included cloves and other comforting twigs and then turned an upside down glass over it. It filled with smoke and he let it sit there while he made my drink. The Charlie Brown was like a creamy peanut butter dessert in cocktail form. So delicious. Then the Smoke Gets In Your Eyes was finally ready and we were both in love from first whiff. It was like being transported to a comfy leather armchair in front of a roaring fire. This is hands down one of our new favorite drinks.</div>

<br />
Our friendly bartender was disappointed to hear that this was our last round and insisted we return and let them make us custom drinks to our preferences. We intend to do just that.<br />

After <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/08/hooked-on-lukes-lobster.html">grabbing a bite at Luke's Lobster</a>, I was still a bit peckish because for some reason I only ordered half a lobster roll like a fool. So when we started walking down the street and The Mr. paused at the red door of <a href="http://www.caracasarepabar.com/">Caracas Arepa Bar</a> To Go, no words needed to be exchanged. In we went.<br />
<div>

<div>
Since we had just eaten we then had the arduous task of picking just one to try from a <a href="http://www.caracasarepabar.com/manhattan.php">menu</a> where everything sounded suuuuper delicious. In the end, we settled on Los Muchachos: Grilled chorizo, spicy white cheese with jalapeños and sautéed peppers.</div>

I wish I had gotten a better picture which would do better justice to just how delicious this was. A solid patty of fried cheese paired with spicy chorizo sausage is a match made in Venezuelan heaven. We have so many favorite spots in this immediate area that it's already so hard to choose where to grab a tasty snack and now we've got another fantastic option to make the choice even harder!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We were lucky to discover <a href="http://lukeslobster.com/">Luke's Lobster</a> pretty early on in our NYC adventures and we immediately declared them to be our favorite lobster rolls (see <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2010/07/lukes-lobster-father-of-all-lobster.html">our original post on Luke's</a>). Since then we've repeatedly traveled throughout New England and have yet to taste a lobster roll that even comes close to comparing. Yes, even in Maine itself. This is one of our absolute favorite places to grab a quick bite, especially when friends visit from out of town. Time after time you take your first bite (either ever or just of the night) and have to pause to breathlessly say "Woooow." Yes, it's that good. If you've never tried it and are wondering if it lives up to the hype/price tag, stop wondering and just go do it.</div>

I was walking home through Hell's Kitchen this evening and wanted a snack when I spotted <a href="http://schmackarys.com/">Schackarys</a> which I've always walked by when it was either already closed for the evening or I was too full to even think about dessert. It's a cute little shop and the smell of the coffee and the fact that they called it "Broadway Blend" prompted me to buy a bag alongside with my treats.<div>
<a name='more'></a>I couldn't decide so I wound up picking up a Sch'Mores Cookie, Funfetti Cookie, and a Kitchen Sink Bar. People with a serious sweet tooth, rejoice. Both the Funfetti Cookie & the Kitchen Sink Bar were too sweet and rich to have more than a bite or two for me. But, the Sch'Mores cookie was just right in this Goldilocks dessert situation and I enjoyed every last bite.</div>
<div>

Add in that the employees were an absolute delight and this is a great place to stop in for a sweet treat!</div>

While I'm naturally skeptical of all Mexican food in NYC, I trusted her judgment and couldn't turn down the opportunity to eat outside on such a perfect evening. Apparently, many other people had the same idea because we were looking at a 30 minute wait. The time passed very quickly as we enjoyed some extremely refreshing Cucumber Mint Margaritas.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>There was no question that we would be enjoying a bowl of their guacamole, so we ordered that as soon as we were seated. It was so creamy that we spent a while trying to figure out what their secret is (the goat cheese??). We then split an order of the Tuna Tostadas which were absolutely delightful. The piece de resistance was their Kale Salad which featured roasted peanuts, parsley, cabbage, & cojita cheese in an agave-lime vinaigrette dressing. The kale is blanched so is soft and not bitter and the unexpected toppings made this my favorite summer kale salad. It's the perfect seasonal counterpart to <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2011/03/intoxicated-by-tipsy-parson.html">my autumn/winter kale salad favorite at Tipsy Parson.</a><br />

Today I made my first visit to Coney Island for the annual <a href="http://www.coneyisland.com/programs/mermaid-parade">Mermaid Parade</a>, a whimsical art parade that celebrates the Coney Island community and seaside spirit. To kick off the parade was no other than Dick Zigun himself aka "the Mayor of Coney Island" and original founder of the parade. Unfortunately, I didn't get too many good shots because my battery died halfway through. But here are a few:<a href="http://www.coneyisland.com/programs/coney-island-circus-sideshow/cast/dick-zigun" style="background-color: #cce4ff; color: black; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; text-decoration: none;" title=""></a></div>

Yeah, I'm not sure what transformers have to do with Mermaids either, but by the way this guy was stopping to pant every few minutes, I'm guessing this costume weighs 70 pounds and was pretty neat.<br />
<br />
After the parade it was time for food! My friend and I grabbed some tacos from Plaza Mexico Dona Zita. Again, no pictures due to a sad battery situation, but let's just say that when we were walking down the street someone stopped us to ask "Um, what is that and where can I get it" in utter jealousy. They were super tasty and totally hit the spot after a few hours having fun in the sun.<br />

After a <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/06/st-andrews-nice-catch.html">pre-theatre jaunt to St. Andrews</a> and watching The Realistic Joneses we weren't quite ready for our night to end. We walked almost all the way down to Penn Station before I was struck with a brilliant idea. Didn't the folks behind fabulous speakeasy Raines Law Room just open up a new cocktail establishment with 3 rooms that capture 3 eras? We were in a cab heading over to Gramercy within 2 minutes.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a>Luckily I knew the address, because while the door is not hidden, there is absolutely nothing indicating what the door at the top of the stairs leads to. To a passerby it looks like the entryway to a swank apartment building while those in the know confidently walk up to the entrance of <a href="http://www.dearirving.com/">Dear Irving</a>. Since it's so new we were able to get a seat at the bar in 10 minutes without a reservation on a Friday night, but I don't think that is going to last long. We were seated on the 1923 side right next to the split to the 1960s. The decor and detail were exquisite and I felt completely transported.<br />

Unfortunately, they still haven't started their food service, so after a couple of rounds we decided to venture on in pursuit of some snacks. We stopped by PDT and put our name on the list and then headed over to another one of our favorite cocktail parlors <a href="http://amoryamargony.com/">Amor y Amargo</a>. It's a tiny little place, but the cocktails will knock your socks off. Just be careful because I only half mean that as an expression. These drinks will throw you for a loop if you're not careful.<br />

<br />After enjoying a round at Amor y Amargo we realized that the night was growing very late and we would probably not make it another 2+ hours of quoted wait time at PDT. The best part about PDT is that even if you can't get in the fallback is <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2012/04/hot-diggity-crif-dogs.html">the amazing Crif Dogs</a>. So we headed back to Crif Dogs to end our night with a couple of our favorites: the Jon-Jon Deragon & Tater Tots.<br />

After picking up some last minute tickets for The Realistic Joneses at the TKTS booth we needed a nearby spot to grab dinner. A quick search of the nearby vicinity pulled up <a href="http://www.standrewsnyc.com/">St. Andrews Scottish Restaurant & Bar</a>. Since we've recently returned from a trip to Scotland, we've been scouting out all the Scottish culture (& Scotch) that we can get our hands on in NYC.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The downstairs is a traditional pub style, but upstairs is a rather nice dining room with white linens and a more sophisticated menu. However, you can also order off the Grill menu up here which was a huge relief since their Scotch Egg is featured only on the grill menu. However, sadly for us, they were out of the Scotch Egg tonight.<br />

<br />We consoled ourselves with an order of Mini Burgers, Corneal Crusted Fried Oysters, Buffalo Crispy Calamari, and Roasted Duck Breast. Way too much food to be sure - especially considering the Calamari was served in a boat. After some drinks and appetizers at both <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/06/everythings-working-for-employees-only.html">Employees Only</a> and <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/06/high-times-in-highlands.html">Highlands</a> we stopped in to Big Gay Ice Cream for a Salty Pimp, but were still feeling a bit peckish. One of our favorite treats when around the Village is a kati roll. While we normally frequent <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2012/01/let-me-see-you-do-kati-roll.html">Kati Roll</a>, our friends at <a href="http://therestaurantfairy.com/">The Restaurant Fairy</a> recently recommended we check out <a href="http://thelewalanyc.com/">Thelewala</a> across the street.<br />

We ordered and then quickly scarfed down an Okra roll. Yes, we ate it so quickly that we completely forgot to take a picture. The cocktails from Employees Only and the Scotch from Highlands may have played a roll in that...<br />
<br />
Anyway, the point is that it was delicious. Are we completely converted? No. But that's because we are loyal to our Kati Roll which we have so many fond memories of. But hey, it's always good to have two wonderful kati roll options on one block.</div>

After some <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/06/everythings-working-for-employees-only.html">delightful cocktails and snacks from Employees Only</a>, we were not quite ready to call it a night so headed East a few blocks to <a href="http://highlands-nyc.com/">Highlands</a>. We've attempted to come to this bar many times because we hear they have a great Scotch Egg, but we tend to swing by on Friday & Saturday nights and this place is hopping. Walking in on a Monday night, they were still doing good business, but it was calm & relaxed and totally unrecognizeable from the scene we were used to.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
We struck up a lovely conversation with our server Rod who was extremely knowledgeable in Scotch and let us try several absolutely delightful Scotches before we settled upon ordering a dram of the Edalour & the Scapa. After this sampling fun, we realized it would be prudent to get a bit more food in our bellies so we ordered several appetizers: The Scotch Egg (of course), Lobster Sliders, and Blue Crab & Prawns on Toast.<br /><div>

As a big lover of high quality speakeasies <a href="http://www.employeesonlynyc.com/">Employees Only</a> has been on my 'must visit' list for quite some time now. On a whim, we decided to have a little Monday night adventure to kick off the week. We found the neon Psychic sign in the West Village window and walked by the actual psychic who sits in the foyer into another world.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a>To kick off the evening we ordered two drinks off of the "Fancy Cocktails" portion of the menu, because, hey, we're fancy people. The Mr ordered the Quiet Storm - Bulleit Bourbon & Red Bush Tea-infused Bianco, Vermouth served tall with Fresh Lemon Juice & Ginger Beer. I ordered the Mata Hari - Pierre Ferrand Ambre Cognac shaken with Chai-infused Italian Vermouth & Pomegranate Juice. How could they leave off the small detail that this delcious cocktail is served with rosebuds!? </div>
<div>
<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Today we did a tour of The Noble Experiment, New York City's only exclusively rum distillery. Conveniently, the Saturday tour is at 4pm which left us just a few measly blocks from <a href="http://www.robertaspizza.com/">Roberta's</a> around dinner time which is a fine situation to be in. It's hard to believe, but <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2012/12/robbed-of-words-at-robertas.html">our last visit to Roberta's</a> was well over a year ago so we were long overdue for an encore.<br />

We were famished so ordered some Focaccia to tide us over until we waited for our pizza to arrive. It hit the spot and whetted our appetites for our Paparizza with romesco, mozzarella, smoked paprika sausage, and onion. Honestly, their crust was even <i>better</i> than I remembered.<br />

After our pizza, we walked through East Williamsburg up to Grand Street, home of some really delightful bars. One of our favorites from <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2013/12/newbiefoodies-tour-east-williamsburg.html">the last time we explored the area</a> was Huckleberry Bar, so we stopped in for a cocktail. Since their "kitchen" is part of the bar, it's almost impossible to ignore the delcious smells wafting over to you from the counter so we got an order of the Pigs in a Blanket too. We had intended to carry on and explore the area even further, but decided that we were pretty tuckered out from an exciting day in Brooklyn and headed back into Manhattan.<br />

It's been a long time since I've even had the 30 minutes that it takes to prepare a <a href="http://blueapron.com/">Blue Apron</a> meal, but things have calmed down a bit so I was excited to get a delivery this week. Here is what was on the menu so you can compare against how mine turned out:</div>

OK so my plating leaves a lot to be desired, but it's a whole heck of a lot fancier than what I could normally make in 30 minutes (or order for delivery). Hands down my favorite was the Beet Pasta because Beets + Goat Cheese = So So Right. <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2012/10/i-can-cook-blue-apron-week-1.html">I've been using Blue Apron for a year and a half</a> now and am still a very satisfied customer! Smashburger was one of our favorite burger joints when we lived in Boulder, CO and we miss it dearly. That's why we are excited that this chain is expanding into NYC in a major way. Their <a href="http://ny.eater.com/archives/2011/06/will_smashburger_be_a_smash_hit_an_early_look_at_its_first_new_york_venue.php">first location is in Fort Greene, Brooklyn</a> and <a href="http://ny.eater.com/archives/2014/04/manhattan_now_has_its_very_first_smashburger.php">now they have one in Midtown West</a> with <a href="http://commercialobserver.com/2014/05/smashburger-expands-franchise-agreements-in-manhattan-queens/">many more to come</a>. Tonight we were in Fort Greene for the special RadioLoveFest taping of Ask Me Another at BAM and stopped in for a couple of burgers before the show.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a>The Mr loves Smashburger because he's a man who appreciates a good burger. Today he ordered the Truffle Mushroom Swiss. I love Smashburger because they have healthy options that are actually super enjoyable. I usually HATE chicken burgers and find them dry and completely unappetizing, but I love theirs. I got it in the Spicy Jalapeno Baja with Guacamole and Pepper Jack - a moist flavor explosion. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While I'm not usually a big fan of chain expansions, especially in NYC, this is one I'm happy to welcome.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Tonight we attended the special RadioLoveFest taping of one of my favorite podcasts, Ask Me Another. While The Mr doesn't listen to podcasts, I've taken him to both of Radiolab's live events and knew he would enjoy special Very Important Puzzlers Robert Krulwich & Jad Abumrad. I also suspected he would be excited by special musical guest They Might be Giants. And I was right. It was a delightful event and afterward we wanted to keep the party going and explore more of what Brooklyn has to offer. Before the show, we had <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2014/06/smashburger-smashing-good-time.html">grabbed a couple of burgers at Smashburger</a>, but we were ready for some cocktails and another nosh.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
When I had first moved to NYC one of my friends had come to visit and we went out with one of her friends who lived in <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2010/10/night-in-brooklyn.html">Carroll Gardens and took us on a mini tour</a> of his neighborhood. I absolutely fell in love with the <a href="http://www.cloverclubny.com/">Clover Club</a> and vowed to bring The Mr one day. While I intended for "one day" to be much sooner, at last it finally happened.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We grabbed a Magic Hour and a Vieux Carre at the bar while we waited for a table to open up. I was actually a bit nervous that the reason I had swooned so hard for this place on my last visit was that it was all so novel to me and that now as a seasoned veteran of cocktail lounges it would lose some of it's shine. While it was a legit concern, Clover Club held up as one of the best. Splendid drinks in an absolutely charming atmosphere, this is one of my favorite types of places NYC has to offer and I always feel transported and relaxed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Last time I was here I only had drinks, but this time we got a few selections off of their food menu too. We started with the Crisps. Sound boring? What if I said they were tossed in duck fat and served with truffled creme fraiche? Yeah, that's right. Absolutely divine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<a href="http://josephleonard.com/">Joseph Leonard</a> has been on my to try brunch list for ages now, so when the opportunity arose on a beautiful spring afternoon we headed off to the West Village to give it a shot. We usually don't order drinks at brunch, but their Bloody Marys looked like a serious opportunity not to be missed. I ordered the Bloody Caesar with vodka, clamato, and sriracha garnished with a deep-fried bacon-wrapped brussels sprout and an oyster. Heck yah.<br />

Imagine how excited we are to have a Chelsea location now. OK, yes, it's actually old news and for some reason I thought I already posted about it, but to my surprise I haven't done a post yet so I needed to correct this wrong.<div>

Tonight we snagged some tickets to see improv troupe "The Godfathers" at UCB and were lucky enough to find no wait for two people on a Friday night. I've been really enjoying Monkey Shoulder scotch recently, so when I saw the special cocktail included it I ordered it no questions asked. However, then when I had a sip I had to ask what was in it because it was pure magic. Turns out their bartender Marshall had created it for a <a href="http://themeatballshop.com/news_item/35/tms-x-monkey-shoulder-cocktail-contest/">Monkey Shoulder cocktail contest</a> and, no surprise to me, he won. This fantastic concoction featured strawberry rhubarb syrup, lime juice, vanilla liquor, rhubarb bitters, and a brown sugar rim. On our way out I asked to shake his hand.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ok right, so the food. That's good here too. The Mr went for a variety Sliders and I got the Kitchen Sink Salad because this is one salad that will never leave you feeling unsatisfied. We also got a side of White Beans and Risotto which of course was way too much food, but how does that phrase go again? There's no such thing as too much of a good thing!</div>

We were on a little trip to Houston and wanted to check out the The Heights neighborhood. We drove and strolled around a bit and found it every bit as lovely as we heard. Finally, we were hungry and wanted a place to eat. There were a lot of choices, but I was drawn to the rather nondescript from the outside <a href="http://coltivarehouston.com/">Coltivare</a> by the promise of fresh ingredients straight from the garden in the back.<div>
<a name='more'></a><div>
There was a bit of a wait for a table or we could be seated immediately at the bar. We put our names down to wait and then realized we were starving so decided to just take the bar seats. Immediately, we were impressed by the whiskey selection and the cocktail menu and selected our first round of drinks. They were good. Really good. But before we could finish them up and go for round number two, we were going to need some food.</div>

<div>
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
The Charred Octopus was especially delightful as it was cooked perfectly and accompanied by berries from the garden. The berries added sweet and tart flavors which were unexpected yet well balanced. We ordered our next round of drinks and picked up a lovely discussion with the guy behind the bar named Morgan. His knowledge was impressive especially of NYC restaurants. When he explained that he had visited all of those places as part of the research for when they were developing the menu for Coltivare, we realized that he was one of the co-owners. So we definitely took his word for it when he suggested a pizza if we were open to something a little off the beaten path. This pizza wound up being the Slow Cooked Duck Pizza which also featured Sweet Potato, Swiss Chard, Red Onion, & Pesto. It was every bit as delicious and interesting as it sounds.</div>

We had an absolutely fantastic time here. This is our absolute favorite kind of restaurant- the people are very serious about their craft, but incredibly chill and not snobby about it. I was invited to partake in a lovely meal at <a href="http://www.damarcella.com/Home.html">Da Marcella</a>, a humble and cozy neighborhood taverna in the Village. The owner, Manual Moreno opened this restaurant in tribute to his mother who would cook large meals to feed their neighbors and continues the tradition of keeping the costs low with the motto "nobody should get rich feeding thy neighbor". Likewise, the restaurant continues to use his family's recipes and this passion and tradition shines through in the food. Speaking of the food, let's take a peak at what we got to sample...<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a>Our first course started with Scottish Wild Salmon & Avocado Tartare which was a refreshing spin on the traditional Tuna Tartare. The ingredients were unique and new, but the preparation and overall taste was very classic.<br /><br />

My absolute favorite of all the dishes we got to try was the Burrata with San Daniele Prosciutto and ruffle Sauce over Crostone. I am a total sucker for high quality burrata and the prosciutto and truffle really pushed this over the edge into the amazing category.<br />

The pasta dish we got to try was the Tagliatelle Artigianali "Setaro al Ragu" Bolognese Classico. Another solid bet on this menu.<br />

Moving on to our meat course we tried the Braised Colorado Lamb Shank with Creamy Polenta. The lamb fell right off the bone and was incredibly tender and fresh, not overly gamey like some lamb you can find in the city. The polenta pairing gave this the traditional "meat & potatoes" feel, but with an Italian flair which made this a really lovely dish.<br />
<br />

Next up came the dessert course. After such a rich and delicious meal, usually the group will have a bite of the dessert to try it, but not be able to finish. But not so at Da Marcella- I've never seen dessert at a Press Dinner go so quickly! In particular, the cheesecake was so amazing that it didn't even make it to my end of the table. They graciously gave us another serving and I couldn't blame my fellow diners for snagging it up- a real stand out!<br />

Da Marcella is simply a lovely neighborhood spot with delicious food served in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Definitely worth stopping by- if you do DEFinitely get the cheesecake! (I have to admit, I almost stayed after the dinner to order my own serving, but wasn't sure I'd be able to waddle out the door afterwards!).</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Tonight we headed down to the Lower East Side to have a <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2013/08/a-rolling-good-time-at-boil.html">crawfish boil at one of our favorite spots, The Boil</a>. Since it's obviously a lot of other people's favorite places too we were looking at a bit of a wait. It seemed the perfect opportunity to meander on in to an unassuming pharmacy in Chinatown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>Of course, this pharmacy is not all that it may seem and is in fact a little speakeasy known as <a href="http://www.apothekenyc.com/">Apotheke</a>. We grabbed ourselves a little table and then perused the menu to find a prescription that would kick start a wonderful night. After some deliberation we finally settled on Round 1:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stimulant: BULL IN A CHINA SHOP </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
42 Below Vodka, Meyer Lemon, Lavender, Coconut Water, Watermelon, Energy Tincture, Champagne, Lime, Agave</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apotheke: Cocktails</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
While we sipped these delicious drinks we took the time to take in our surroundings and appreciate the beaker based lighting fixtures and the mixologists' lab coats. I absolutely love dedication to a theme, so these things delighted me. Before you knew it, we were ready for Round 2:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Euphoric Enhancer: TAXICAB CONFESSIONS </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Jim Beam Bourbon, Zu Bisongrass Vodka, Maple, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, Lemon, Apple Cider, Nutmeg</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stress Reliever: WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Auchentoshan Single Malt Scotch, Cocoa Nib, Black Currant, Chocolate Extract, Lime, Agave</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Finally, after these delicious drinks our table at The Boil was ready. A couple of Abita Purple Hazes, a bag of crawfish, lobster, corn, sausage, & potatoes brought us to food coma heaven. These iPhone pictures of course don't do it justice, so I encourage you to see <a href="http://www.newbiefoodies.com/2013/08/a-rolling-good-time-at-boil.html">this post with even better food porn pics</a>.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Boil: Lobster</td></tr>

Once we had eaten our fill we realized we were not quite ready to head for home for the evening so The Mr. mentioned another bar that he wanted to take me to to check out. Imagine my excitement when said bar turned out to be <a href="http://www.pouringribbons.com/">Pouring Ribbons</a>! Getting to knock out two of my 'must try' cocktail lounges in one evening is a rare delight. We asked our charming waitress to recommend two chartreuses to try for people who have never tried chartreuse before and she hooked us up. We were totally blown away by the complexity of flavors and couldn't even begin to pick them all apart.<br />

I really enjoyed the Chartreuse, but for the 2nd round I also wanted to try a specialty cocktail off of their menu so ordered a Bad Habit: Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Canteloupe, Cynar, Egg White, Laphroaig Quarter Cask which fell on the slightly refreshing & very adventurous drink scale. Creamy and smooth yet light and refreshing and also smokey all in one, this was phenomenal.<br />
<br />
This was basically a perfect NYC night and is an itinerary I would recommend to anyone!<br />
