Much ado about Mexicue
I'm not sure if Mexicue is a new addition to Seamless or if I just missed it before, but when we needed our post-Thanksgiving in Texas fix- it popped up. The two staple foods in Texas are BBQ & Mexican, so it's surprising that I've never seen these cuisines fused before.

Dinosaur Attacks
| Fried Green Tomatoes |
| 3/4 Rack with Salted Potatoes, Beans & Cornbread |
After a trip to the American Museum of Natural History it made perfect sense (both geographically and thematically) to finally visit the famed Dinosaur BBQ joint in Harlem. We thought we were being clever by going at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon-not quite dinner, well past lunch- but were still facing an hour wait. We were way too hungry for that nonsense so turned into seat stalkers in the first-come, first-serve bar area. Our vigilance paid off and we ordered our beers (great selection!) and our meal.

Big Apple BBQ 2011
Day 1
Started our day out with 17th Street Bar & Grill's Memphis style ribs and baked beans. Mmmm fall off the bone, dry rubbed meat. Now that's what I call breakfast. I'm not usually a big baked beans fan, but these were full of veggies which gave it a really nice twist.
Time for round 2, St Louis style ribs from the Checkered Pig. Oh man, my heart melted for these ribs just like they melted in my mouth. I also really liked the cole slaw which is another surprise for me, however The Mr felt pretty ambivalent about it.

After a break to drink some beer and listen to the band, we were ready to tackle Big Bob Gibson's pulled pork sandwich. Even the fast pass line for this tent was pretty long and one bite in, we could see why. Juicy and moist pork topped with your choice of Bob Gibson's special sauces. Another slaw win for me, this one had a faint mustard hint to it.
At this point we were pretty stuffed, but had the yearning for something sweet. Unfortunately, the line for Fried Pies and for Blue Smoke's Dessert tent were both just out of control at this point. We meant to come back for dinner...but never quite built up the appetite. Round 2 will have to wait until tomorrow.

Deep in the Heart of Hill Country
It didn't take long for two Texans in NYC to learn about Hill Country BBQ and since it came highly recommended from other Texans, we were eager to check it out. We had the brilliant idea of going to watch the UT v Texas Tech game, but didn't realize what a hot ticket it is to score a spot downstairs. Instead we went ahead and ate in the regular dining room and then watched the game on a small TV in the bar area.
With a bottle of Lone Star, our table full of brisket, ribs, green bean casserole & corn pudding, and a sea full of burnt orange it was hard to believe we were in New York. This BBQ would definitely pass in Texas, but of course it couldn't beat some of our favorites. Just goes to show that NYC is a magical city where you can get anything your little heart desires and there's not much to miss from the places you've left behind (except of course for the people).

Not wild about Wildwood BBQ
We need to scope out all our neighborhood Gramercy/Flatiron haunts and we had a pang of longing for BBQ so across the street to Wildwood BBQ we went. We wanted to order some ribs, but they were out. Out? You're a BBQ restaurant and you are OUT of ribs? We scoffed and then ordered the brisket and pulled pork with beans & creamed spinach instead.

Despite our scoffing, we had to admit it was good. Much better than us Texas BBQ connoisseurs expected to get in NYC. However, it didn't blow us away. Final verdict is that it will do when we need a quick BBQ fix, but is probably not a place that we will actively seek out again.
